Healthy Supports

The Healthy Supports focus area includes healthcare providers, the built environment such as walking trails, policy that promotes healthy lifestyles, social marketing and this website.

Recommendations include encouraging partnerships between healthcare providers, schools, faith-based groups, and other community organizations in prevention efforts targeted at social and environmental causes of overweight and obesity. Another suggestion is to increase the use of available community facilities (sidewalks, school tracks, walking trails, roads, malls, recreation areas, etc.) to achieve regular physical activity.

Another recommendation is to develop and communicate a statewide clear, concise and consistent message that fosters public awareness of the health benefits of regular physical activity, healthy dietary choices, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Specific policy recommendations include:

  • Enhancement of physical education in all public schools,
  • Limiting access to soft drinks and junk foods in public schools and increasing access to healthful foods and drinks,
  • Creation of a voluntary program encouraging the posting of caloric and nutrition information on menus of restaurants, and
  • Creation of a program that offers incentives to employers to provide wellness programs for their employees.
